WHAT ARE YOUR PRODUCTS MADE OF?
All our products are made entirely from natural, highly renewable materials. Because different materials lend themselves to different applications, we use various plants to make our products.
- Sugarcane makes for great heavy-duty plates and bowls
- Corn transforms into bio-plastic (ie. utensils and cold cups)
HOW IS YOUR SUGARCANE HARVESTED? WHAT IS THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR YOUR SUGARCANE PLATES, BOWLS, NAPKINS AND TISSUE?
It's actually upcycled! The sugarcane pulp we source to make our tabletop items and facial tissue from is actually a waste-byproduct of the sugar industry.
Traditionally, after farmers juice the sugarcane stalk to extract the sweet juice for sugar, they are left with pulp. Farmers normally burn their leftover cane pulp in the fields. But we re-use the waste by processing the fiber to make our products.
Sugarcane rarely has pests, so it is not normally sprayed. But it does grow from the soil, so just to make sure that the fiber is up to our high-quality standards, the bagasse (pulp) is cleaned, processed and finally, molded into our plates and bowls. We use H202 (hydrogen peroxide) to sanitize and naturally whiten the pulp...then transform them into our heavy-duty plates and bowls. Cool, huh?
WHERE ARE COMPO PRODUCTS MADE?
We are a Minnesotan company. Our products are designed in our hometown of Minneapolis. But due to the location of eo-csystems that support sugarcane plant growth — the raw material that we make the majority of our products from — we choose to ethically manufacture our products in China.
I UNDERSTAND THAT COMPO PRODUCTS ARE SUSTAINABLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY, BUT HOW ARE THEY BETTER THAN RECYCLED PAPER PRODUCTS?
The fact is, recycled paper can't be produced without first destroying virgin forests. One cannot exist without the other. Additionally, the original materials from which "recycled paper" is made often contains up to 40% fillers, coatings and chemicals. The result is a paper that is a mishmash of unknowns, often containing BPAs and other chemicals from the de-inking process.
Simply: we believe our forests have a much larger role to play in the health of our ecosystems, and our lives. This is why our BPA-free products are a fantastic alternative to recycled paper products. They are tree-free, toxin-free and naturally breakdown without leaching chemicals into our soils or waterways.
DO YOUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN ANY CHEMICALS?
Absolutely no dyes, inks, bleach or fragrances. Just honest, safe and healthy products for your family and the environment.
Our products are completely chemical-free. We keep our ingredients simple, natural and 100% bio-based, just like our products. Rather than harmful bleaches, we use hydrogen peroxide to whiten and sanitize our raw material, which rapidly incorporates back into the earth as water and oxygen.
I KNOW THAT MANY RECYCLED PRODUCTS CONTAIN BPA, ARE YOUR PRODUCTS BPA-FREE?
Our entire line of products is BPA and petroleum free.
WHAT DOES "COMPOSTABLE" MEAN?
Unlike chemical-based compounds, compostable materials naturally break-down into soil. It's important that environmental conditions within the compost-heap or facility are correct. Think of it like a wine cellar for trash! Luckily, nature makes it pretty easy. All our plates and bowls will naturally breakdown in your backyard compost heap.
We pride ourselves on exclusively offering compostable products. But two of our items are only compostable via industrial facilities or curbside composting programs:
- Cold cups
All our other products are backyard compostable. If you're looking for an industrial composting facility in your area, please visit findacomposter.com
I SWEAR I'VE SEEN YOUR STUFF BEFORE! WERE YOU EVER CALLED "ULTRA GREEN" INSTEAD OF "COMPO"?
Yes! In fact, we went through a name change rather recently. In August of 2014 we went from being corporately-owned to being family-owned. To reflect this, we changed our name to Compo. Learn more about our Father-Daughter Story.
